Technology
Curriculum Intent
The Technology curriculum aims to provide opportunities where students can combine creative thinking and problem solving whilst working with a wide range of materials. At the heart of what we aim to achieve is instilling the belief in our students and our wider community that good design and healthy eating are central to forming a responsible society.
Design & Technology: Students learn about Sustainable Design and the impact this can have on our lives. Offering students the opportunity to learn new skills to achieve exciting solutions to real design problems fosters creative thinking in a way that is unique to our curriculum.
Food & Nutrition: Food and Nutrition will equip our students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. The curriculum will develop vital life skills that enable them to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life. Through food and nutrition, students learn to understand the relationship between diet, nutrition and health, including the physiological and psychological effects of poor diet and health and to understand the economic, environmental, ethical, and socio-cultural influences on food availability, production processes, diet and health choices.
How is Technology delivered at Warden Park?
All students are taught this subject in Key Stage 3. Students receive four lessons of Technology every two weeks. The Technology department is comprised of two key subject areas, Design & Technology and Food & Nutrition. During each year all students will spend one term doing Food & Nutrition and the remaining two terms in Design & Technology.
At Key Stage 4 students can choose from GCSE Food preparation and nutrition, Level 2 Certificate in Child Development, GCSE Design & Technology Resistant Materials pathway, or a Graphics pathway. When studying these subjects students will have 5 lessons per fortnight.
Students are encouraged to get involved with the Technology garden, which is underpinned by the department vision of promoting sustainable living.
