Maths

Curriculum Intent

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. Mathematics education at Warden Park therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. At Warden Park, we say that MATHS is Mainly About Thinking Skills.

We teach students how to use and apply mathematical techniques, but just as importantly we teach the skills of reasoning, interpreting, communicating and problem solving; all important thinking skills for young people as they prepare for life in the modern world. We also encourage students to become independent learners through our use of online learning tools such as Hegarty Maths, Geogebra and Desmos.

How is Maths delivered at Warden Park?

Students study Maths for 7 lessons per fortnight in  Years 7 & 8, increasing to 8 hours per fortnight from Year 9. We deliver our maths classes in two levels of mixed ability groups: standard and upper. Within standard and upper groups the classes are of mixed ability,  We also have small ‘nurture groups’ groups for extra support in years 7-9, and an accelerated group from Year 9 who take Maths GCSE and OCR Additional Maths as well.

To find out more about these programmes of study please visit the subject pages of our dedicated Key Stage 4 website.
