Year 7 Football Mid Sussex District Champions

On Tuesday 18th April, the Mid Sussex District Final was played between Warden Park and Forest. The match was played at Forest so they enjoyed home advantage. On a difficult and challenging pitch, Warden Park started very brightly, creating a few opportunities and a corner in the opening 5 minutes. Forest grew into the match and were the better team for the first half, creating a number of scoring opportunities. A few good saves were made by Dylan and some last ditch tackles and blocks stopped Forest from taking the lead. Warden Park showed great courage, determination and togetherness to keep it 0-0 at half time.

Warden Park started the second half the better side, creating a number of chances. The team were able to keep the ball better and make some connections between the Centre Forward Zac and the wide players. Midway through the half, they took a deserved lead by playing the ball from the middle out wide and cross across the box;  Jake was there to slot the ball into the net. Shortly after Warden Park were denied a blatant penalty appeal. The team were able to hold out for the rest of the game with some great defending and some brilliant game management.

Congratulations on a great achievement.

Character in action

This week students have been focusing on further developing respectful listening and confident speaking skills through debating. These lessons have also made links to English in terms of revising persuasive techniques, as well as enhancing their oracy skills (the ability to talk well).
Debating skills will be the focus of the next few weeks. In order to develop confidence in public speaking students have been preparing a debate focussed on arguing that an animal of their choice would win in a battle against an animal of their partners choice. Students are really enjoying the competitive nature of the task!
If you’re interested in developing your child’s ability to speak confidently in any situation, one idea is to coach them through a situation that requires them to talk to a person that they don’t know, under your supervision. For example, you could encourage them to confidently say hello to the person at the Tesco’s checkout and ask how their day is going. As a precursor to this, by modelling how you speak to others in the community and talking about this with tour child, your child will see what confident speaking, and good citizenship, looks like.
Another example could be that the next time your child attends an appointment with you, allow them to take the lead. For example, this could be attending an opticians appointment where they could take the lead on giving their details to the professional. You might ask them at the end of the appointment, “do you have any questions for the optician?” Or before the appointment, “ would you like to know more about what happens in the eye test? What questions could you ask?”. As adults and parents/carers, it is easy for us to take the lead in these situations, sometimes it is necessary and more appropriate. However, it is important for children to know how to speak in situations such as the ones above. Through gentle coaching and role modelling by us, children can develop confident speaking skills which will allow them to thrive in all of life’s situations.

Congratulations to our winners of the Business Studies Youth Enterprise Project!!

Liam H (8AF1) guessed the closest number of sweets in the jar which contained 166 sweets and a bonus bottle of Prime!  His guess was just 2 sweets short at 164 so well done and enjoy!!!
Congratulations also to Mr Paul Meekin who's name was drawn to win the MINI for the weekend!! Well done and enjoy the drive!!

Overall though, thank you from the Business Studies YEP team for everyone who donated to this great cause of St Catherine's Hospice.  With your help we managed to turn £50 seed money, from Natwest, into just under £650 in under 10 weeks (with a lot of disruption to deal with!!!) through various different initiatives.

Next up, the awards  ceremony next week to see how we compared with other schools and to see if we win any awards...watch this space!!!"

Evie performs at the royal Albert Hall

On Easter Day 2023, Evie M in Year 8 played in the Suzuki Gala 2023 at the Royal Albert Hall.  This international showcase featured over a thousand children from thirty one countries.

The Hall was filled with players on the stage, in the choir stalls and in the arena, giving performances from violin, viola, cello, piano, flute and recorder.

It was a magical celebration with music that all children could play together, to more advanced pieces such as the Haydn Cello Concerto which Evie played with around twenty five cellists.

Evie had the amazing experience of sitting right at the front of the stage.

What a fantastic experience!

My experience at the National Youth Music Theatre

At the beginning of this year, I applied for an audition with the National Youth Music Theatre, a theatre company founded in 1976 and dubbed “the best youth music theatre in the world” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Hundreds to thousands of people audition each year for the number of productions they put on.

A few months ago, I went for my first audition, which was an all-day process, and got a callback a week later. I then went to the callback, and was cast in their concert, which will be performed twice in the summer.

In the first week of the Easter break, I spent 8 days on a residential in Tonbridge to rehearse for this concert. The rehearsals were twelve hours long, full of singing, dancing and acting, with a one hour break for lunch and another for dinner. It was extremely intense, but taught me a lot about the theatre industry, and being surrounded by so many people who were just as passionate as me about performing encouraged me to push myself further.

The concert’s first performance is on the 8th July at the Fuse Festival, and the second is on the 27th August at the Southwark Playhouse in London.

Izzy visits a elephant sanctuary in Thaliand

We arrived at the Living Green Foundation sanctuary” in Thailand (Chaing Mai) following a long journey from Haywards Heath. We started with a taxi ride from our house to Heathrow airport, a 13 hour plane to Bangkok, a 20 minute tuk tuk to the train station, a 13 hour sleeper train to the North of Thailand and then a 2 hour truck ride deep into the jungle. The temperature is 37 degrees and the humidity is 57%.

There are 9 rescued elephants living at the sanctuary at the moment. One is a 2 year old orphan whose mother died last year. One is a retired 45 year old female who used to work as a logger. This is when the elephant is used instead of a car and carries all the logs from the jungle to the village to build. The logging elephant works up to 12 hours a day and often means the elephant is mistreated. Elephants eat up to 20 hours a day so logging elephants do not get enough food. They eat 400 kilos of food each day (1 kilo is a bag of sugar).
The local village and mountain tribes provide all of the bananas for the elephants for free and in return, the sanctuary asks their volunteers (us) to visit and swim in the local waterfall and try some of the coffee which the tribes grow in the jungle. The visitors then hopefully buy some of the coffee (we paid 60p for 4 big bags) and this helps the villagers which in return helps the elephants.
The elephants eat bananas and sugarcane. They are herbivores so they do not eat meat. They love to bath and play in the lake and use their trunks to wash their own backs. They also need help so we fill buckets of water and throw it onto their faces.
Elephants can be trained just like like dogs can though you need to shout really loud as they have very small ear holes and massive ear flaps that cover the hole.
Each morning we had to feed and wash the elephants which they loved. It’s then play time which can be tricky as they do not realise their own strength! If you run they run after you and they can run faster than me! The same is repeated in the afternoon and then evening. When the sun goes down the elephants love to lay in the shade and rub their backs along a tree trunk.
During Covid, there were not enough volunteers at the sanctuary and the 4 farmers who live there had to care for the elephants on their own. It was hard work and they worked from sunrise to sunset 7 days a week. They are now able to take a rest while the volunteers look after the elephants. The local tribe still provided bananas for the elephants despite not being able to sell their coffee beans to the volunteers.
I hope to return to the sanctuary one day. Elephants have an amazing memory and will remember everybody they meet forever.

Oskar starts the new season with a first place

The new season started last weekend at Cadwell Park and Oskar qualified in p2 for the first race and took the lead straight from the start and led the race from start to finish to secure his first first place.

In the second race he qualified in p4 and moved into 3rd from the start and did an amazing over take on the outside of a fast bend to move into second and started to hunt down 1st place but sadly due to previous red flags in the day his race was cut short by 5 minutes so he ran out of time, however he secured a 2st and a 2nd place for the weekend and now sits as the championship leader overall.
