Why study a language?

One of the most common remarks we hear from parents at Parents Evening is “I wish I had carried on learning languages”. Learning a language takes commitment, hard work and determination. The rewards however, are immeasurable.

If your child needs inspiration to learn, click on the BBC website here!

Learning Languages at Warden Park

Skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing

Students are assessed in four areas: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. All skills will be assessed formally once per term, although these skills are practised throughout the course.

Vocabulary

Students will be given regular vocabulary tests set by the teacher. A useful website to help to learn vocabulary is www.vocabexpress.com and www.quizlet.com All students are encouraged to find their way of learning that works best for them. Here is a website with some ideas from “experts”

Grammar

Students are expected to understand grammatical language.  This list of definitions may help students understand grammatical terms we use in language lessons.

GCSE Languages

We follow the Edexcel exam board. All skills are assessed at the end of the course; there are exams in Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Students will need to have a working knowledge of approximately 2000 words for the GCSE.

There are five Themes covered through the GCSE course:

Theme 1 – Identity and Culture

Theme 2 – Local Area, holidays and travel

Theme 3 – School

Theme 4 – Future Aspirations, Work and School

Theme 5 – Global and International Dimension

Revision is based around the Pearson Revision Guides and the students’ own resources (e.g. vocab books…)

Booster sessions run throughout the year to support students through the GCSE course.

Cultural Learning

Students will have the opportunity to communicate with students from French, German or Spanish schools. In the past, this has been via Skype, via a closed Edmodo forum, and we have sent and received letters. We also have an annual visit from our friends from schools in Berlin and Schreisheim

Each year we have Language Plays. Any student studying French, German or Spanish is invited to attend a play in the target language. These plays are very popular among our students, and they always are surprised at how much they understand.

Language trips

Each year, we run homestay trips to France, Germany and Spain for students in Year 9 or Year 10 taking GCSE Languages. In a homestay trip, students stay in pairs with a French, German or Spanish family. They will spend the day learning Languages and doing cultural visits and activities, and the evening with their host families, experiencing "real life". Cultural activities include flamenco workshops in Spain, magic and circus training in France and Christmas markets in Cologne.

These trips are proving to be exciting opportunities for students to develop not just their language skills, but also their resilience and personal development. They come back matured and with a renewed enthusiasm for Languages.
